Father of the Groom Speech – Five Tips For Giving Your Father of the Groom Speech
The father of the groom speech, has been growing in popularity in recent years, and is now quite common. Whilst it will probably never be the show topping finale that the bride’s father’s speech is, it is still a nerve wracking moment for anyone not used to public speaking. Here I have five tips to help you deliver the best father of the groom speech possible.
TIP ONE: Calm your nerves! You will obviously be nervous that is only human nature, it is after all a big deal. Remember everyone in your audience is your friend even if they do not know you they will all be wishing for you to succeed. Use your nervous energy positively, smile and look around at the guests try to make eye contact with a few people you know in the audience.
TIP TWO: The best way to relax is to practice. Do it over and over again until you are sure your delivery is good. This will give you confidence and that in turn will allow you to relax.
TIP THREE: Even though you will have practised a lot, it is good to have written prompts handy especially the names of everyone you are going to mention.
TIP FOUR: Keep it short! You really do not need to go over five minutes, it is very easy to be self indulgent and talk about all the things that you personally find relevant, but you do not want to bore your guests.
TIP FIVE: Add some jokes. You will not be addressing a group of shareholders with the yearly accounts here, so liven it up with a couple of good one-liners. Tell a short funny story, or a real account of something that happened to your son in the past, so long as it is not embarrassing.
Close your speech with a toast, but find out beforehand from other people making a speech on the day, and determine who they will be toasting, so that you do not repeat each other.
