There are two ways to stand out in the crowd. One is to look the most “coolish.” The other is to look foolish. Both work. If it is your objective to simply get noticed then watch a few old Rodney Dangerfield movies to get ideas. Make sure your fashion choices are out of sync, out-dated, pick colors and patterns that clash, the brighter and wilder the better, do something like always wear patent leather shoes, even at the beach, make all polyesters your friend and don’t forget about hats, the ones that have two cans of beers, one on each side with crazy straws to drink from them are especially good.

Be sure to wear a fanny pack with a couple of extra beers in it, cause you are going to need to drink as much as possible so you don’t care what anyone thinks of you. Rodney Dangerfield’s (1921 to 2004) tagline was “I can’t get no respect!” and there was a reason for it. He was also quoted as saying, “If you want to look thin, hang around with really fat people!”

There is a reason why fashion trends have a limitation, somebody figures out that some of the stuff just looks stupid and then everyone else stops wearing it. It is like the fashion music stops and when it stops you don’t want to be the only one still wearing the beer-guzzler hat. Some fashions are just too crazy. A lot of the runways fashions make interesting things to look at, but are not made for mass consumption.

Sometimes you can make a new fashion statement by going against a trend. Think of half-shaven men becoming more sexy that clean-shaven ones. This probably got started the first time a major male movie star woke up after an all night binge with only a few minutes to make it to the Good Morning National TV Show in order to promote his new movie, and he did not have time to shave.

He got on the show and the female host says something like “Wow, you look so sexy, like you just woke up next to me in bed”. After all this may be her only chance to hit him up for a date. Well, he did JUST wake up but not next to her. Anyway that is how a fashion trend gets born, people either get tired of wearing the same old things or get too lazy to do the same old things in the same old ways. However, good fashion can be achieved by following current trends in a sensible way.

This means wearing the things that are fashionable, but also look very good on you. There are certain classic looks that have remained popular for very long periods of time and you can get everyone to pay attention to you when you walk into a room if you follow those basic style guides. Dress appropriately for the event, dress a little upscale from everyone else and if you feel daring go for a single statement of difference.

example, if you expect everyone to be wearing a black tux, wear a white one, but make sure your tux is the highest quality of any in the room. Then you will stand out in the crowd. Of course it also helps if you are a famous movie star.
