The History Of Fedora Hats In Mens Fashion
The generations of today may not be quite familiar with Fedora Hats, and this accessory may have never been as popular at all, if not for a famous actress of older times called Sarah Bernhardt, who had strong acting abilities and wore the hat during a stage play in 1882 where she portrayed a Princess Fedora (thus the hat become known as the fedora).
Because the play was very popular, and many people saw her wearing the hat, even long after she was gone, the name fedora still stuck. When Sarah traveled throughout Europe and eventually to the United States and did the American version of this French play, the hat quickly caught the eye of fashion aficionados, and wearing one soon became one the hottest trends for both men and women.
Though in time the original design was somewhat altered by different designers into what many remember as the kind of hat that was associated with what a gangster would wear, the fedora certainly has withstood the test of time and even today is considered to be chic, fashionably enigmatic and widely accepted. Funny enough even though it was originally designed to be feminine, and for women only, with the design changes over the years many men wore it as a symbol of their toughness, giving them poise, confidence, and a bad boy look.
The fedora ended up being a commonly worn accessory for men and can often be seen in many of the older movies on TV even today. Of course, as TV and media grew, so did the popularity of the fedora (as is often the case), and can still be seen worn by different cultures today.
Even in today’s society the fedora is still worn all the time by Orthodox Jews who wear the black version of the hat, and some speculate that this is originally where the style came from, as they have been wearing them (albeit a different style of the gangster look) for years, and are a very important part of their wardrobe, that gives distinction of their prominence in their community.
Although you may see some men and women wearing the fedora in the general public, the popularity of the baseball cap soon eclipsed the wearing of the fedora, except in some social functions. But not unlike many fashion trends, what goes around comes back around, and the fedora may be starting to gain its popularity once again, as such legendary icons as Michael Jackson, Brittany Spears and even Justin Timberlake, to name a few, have been seen sporting the fedora style in their videos and in certain social events.
Also because of the different types of fabrics that a fedora can now be made of, you can choose between the more manly styles for the guys, or even go with a more feminine style made of straw for the ladies; there are a variety of options and the choice is yours, but whatever you choose, you can be sure that your fedora will get just the right amount of attention whenever it is worn!
