The Men’s Guide To Accessories

Some men find choosing accessories to be a daunting task, and many never change their jewellery or belt. While this can work for every day it isn’t ideal for more formal occasions, or for the man who likes to vary his look. It’s important to give a smart impression at office occasions and our accessorising guide will help you look both stylish and professional, whilst still maintaining your casual on trend look out of work.

This guide will help you get to grips with accessorising your outfit, staying fashionable and looking great whilst still looking like you.

Jewellery

A man should have a variety of jewellery to choose from for casual and formal occasions. As well as the basics like a wedding ring (if you wear one) there should be no other item that you wear constantly. Even watches should be changed according to occasion.

For day-to-day wear a simple tribal or leather necklace is enough. Many men do not wear a necklace at all but some feel more comfortable wearing one. If you’re going to be wearing a tie then a necklace is not necessary.

Alternatively a simple silver or gold chain can look stylish, just remember to colour coordinate with any other jewellery you may be wearing. A gold necklace with a silver wedding ring is something of an accessory faux pas.

To mix up your look try wearing a chunky pendant or dog tags.

Belts

There are a variety of styles of belts available and they’re not all suitable for every occasion. If you want a versatile belt that works for both formal and casualwear then a simple leather style is best. Alternatively a canvas belt is a great choice for casual wear.

If you want a fancy style for nights out then get a belt with a fun buckle, you can get buckles made from a variety of things, you can even get electronic buckles that can play messages.

Don’t be afraid to vary your selection of belts a little, but never wear a brown belt with black trousers/ shoes – not a good look.

Wallets

Every man should have a leather (or leather look) wallet. Some men prefer a less formal style for everyday use, but you must always have a smart wallet for formal occasions, nights out etc. It shows an inherent sense of style and elegance.

Man-Bags

When I say man-bag I do not mean handbag with an “m” I mean man bag. Having a bag is useful for a myriad of reasons. On a day to day basis we can often cope without a specific receptacle for carrying essentials. But as soon as you need more than your keys, wallet and phone you’re in trouble.

On casual days a record bag or rucksack is a good choice. These are inherently masculine and show purpose. For the office a briefcase or smart leather satchel are safe bets. They’re big enough to carry anything you may need, and still come across as professional.

Watches

A simple leather strap watch is a good all rounder, but many men like to use their watch to show their sense of style. A sports watch is great for casual wear, but unless you work outdoors it isn’t always professional enough for work.  General office wear should be consigned to a leather strap, canvas straps or sports watches are great for day to day casual and a metal watch is ideal for formalwear.

So now you know how to accessorise to give the best impression. You can vary your look without changing your style and even tailor it for any occasion right down to the smallest detail.
